Navigating Denver's Dog Parks: Ensuring Safe and Positive Play

Three dogs playing in a dog park in Denver and Boulder

Denver has some amazing dog parks, but not all of them set dogs up for success. As a trainer, I don’t believe all dog parks are bad— most dogs thoroughly enjoy (and need) social play with members of their own species! But certain park features make a big difference in keeping interactions safe and fun.

Look for parks that are larger than 5 acres so dogs have space to spread out. Overcrowding can lead to stress, hyper-arousal, and unnecessary conflicts.

Parks with multiple entrances also help prevent chaotic pile-ups when new dogs arrive.

Unfenced parks tend to attract owners who have better recall control over their dogs, leading to calmer, more manageable play.

Parks with walking trails and open layouts encourage owners to keep moving, which prevents overstimulated, stationary play clusters that often escalate.

Westminster Hills Open Space and Cherry Creek Off-Leash Area are some of my favorites. Both have creeks, too!

Before heading to the park, make sure your dog has a reliable recall and can disengage from play when needed. If your dog struggles with either, I can help! Reach out to schedule a training session and set your dog up for success.
